Abstract: The effects of water interaction with UO2 single crystals (leaching) were studied by of 7.53 MewV 4He-ion channelling. Upon leaching at temperatures above 150*C transformation of the surface layer into a higher oxide, most probably U3O7, was observed. The lattice mismatch between the bulk crystal and the transformed layer produced important changes in the <110> axial channeling direction. Basing on these data and Monte Carlo channeling a model structure of the transformed layer was developed.
