|Abstract:||In this study the biochemical content of a large number of different leaf spieces has been correlated with their optical properties. The study is a part of a large experiment whose objective is the correlation of the biochemical contents of vegetation with the optical properties derived from measurements made with airborne spectrometers and high resolution satellite-mounted detectors. Statidtical analysis have been carried out on measured values of trasmittance, absorbance and reflectance of single leaves and optically thick samples (stacked leaves) as well as on their transformation, such as the first derivative and the logarithm of the inverse reflectance. In order to obtain a complete data set, both dry material and optically thick samples, which are known to provide their better results, and fresh leaves have been used. The results of the study show that it is possible to obtain correlation between optical properties and biochemical content - in particular protein, cellulose and lignin - with squared multiple regression coefficients higher than 0,8, using up to 10 appropriately selected wavelengths. The results regarding starch, which is characterized by a lower concentration than that of the other components, did not yield satisfactory correlations.|
