Abstract: In this paper a quick overview of some current efforts to employ the QRA tools to nuclear security applications is firstly exposed. Then, an illustrative example is introduced to show how, for security related applications, there is the need for tools capable of handling: a) Non Coherent Logic Structures; b) High failure probability values in an exact way. The main features of the new JRC ASTRA package for Fault Tree Analysis are finally illustrated and conclusions for applicability and limitation of FTA to security applications and for new areas of research and development are drawn.
