Abstract: The light actinide elements (thorium to americium) display evidence of 5f electron involvment in chemical bonding, an excellent example of this behaviour being the binary oxides of these elements. The Np-O phase diagram showas both tetra- and penta-valent oxides, NpO2 and Np2O5 are stable.
