|Abstract:||This paper describes a prototype visualization tool, named Perla3D, using virtual reality for remotely monitoring or for off-line reviewing data from radiation detectors installed for surveillance purposes in a nuclear facility. This first tool version is coupled to the data acquisition and surveillance system of the PERLA Plutonium storage laboratory at the EC Joint Research Centre of Ispra (Italy). The aim of Perla3D is to demonstrate that the 3D virtual visualization could significantly improve and ease the review work of Nuclear Safeguards inspectors, but that it also would permit to remotely carry out routine inspection activities from the headquarters of a Nuclear Safeguards agency like the EURATOM or the IAEA. Other potential applications of this tool, as inspectors training and vulnerability assessment, are also discussed in this paper.|
