Abstract: THE JRC MOBILE UNIT PARTICIPATED IN JUNE 1983 IN THE 6TH REMOTE SENSING CAMPAIGN SPONSORED BY THE CEC, THE FRENCH MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE DIRECTION INTERDEPARTEMENTALE DE L'INDUSTRIE (DII) IN THE FOS-BERRE INDUSTRIAL REGION, NEAR MARSEILLE. THIS COMPAIGN HAD AS PRIMARY OBJECTIVE THE EVALUATION OF EMISSION AND DISPERSION OF POLLUTANTS IN THE WARM SEASON WHEN HIGH POLLUTION EPISODES MAY OCCUR. THE MOBILE UNIT WAS EQUIPPED WITH A CORRELATION SPECTROMETER (COSPEC V) FOR VERTICAL BURDEN SO2 MEASUREMENT AND, RESPECTIVELY A BENDIX GAS-CHROMATOGRAPH AND A GCA MONITOR FOR SO2 AND AEROSOL GROUND LEVEL MONITORING. MEASURED VALUES OF SO2 WERE ACQUIRED ON TAPE VIA A HEWLETT-PACKARD 9825 COMPUTER AND THEN DECODED AND PLOTTED INTO MAPS ACCORDING TO THE WIND DIRECTION. VERTICAL BURDEN DATA OF SO2 ARE ANALYSED IN RELATION TO THE COMPLEX OROGRAPHY AND WIND FIELD AND CONVERTED TO EMISSION DATA. COMPUTED EMISSIONS ARE FINALLY DISCUSSED IN COMPARISON TO CLAIMED EMISSIONS. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CLAIMED AND ESTIMATED VALUES COULD BE MAINLY ASCRIBED TO THE POOR INFORMATION ON CLAIMED EMISSIONS MADE AVAILABLE BY DII OR TO UNPREDICTABLE WIND PARAMETERS.
