Abstract: MOLTEN UO2, UC, AL2O3/SODIUM INTERACTIONS WERE OBTAINED; AT INTERMEDIATE SCALE, IN THE POURING MODE OF CONTACT, WITHOUT SHOCK TRIGGERS, AND AT LOW TEMPERATURE (THE FUELS AT MELTING POINT AND SODIUM SUBCOOLED). THESE INTERACTIONS WERE NOT ENERGETIC. THEY COULD BE UNDER- STOOD BY USING THE BOILING MAP OF SODIUM. TWO FUEL FRAGMENTATION MECHANISMS WERE DETERMINED: - SODIUM TRANSITION BOILING WHICH CAUSES SODIUM VAPOUR BUBBLE COLLAPSES ON FUEL LUMPS. THESE IN THEIR TURN CAUSE FUEL FRAGMENTATION INTO COARSE, D>1 MM, SMOOTH, PARTICLES. - THERMAL STRESS, OR SHRINKAGE, CRACKING WHICH CAUSES FRAC- TURING OF THESE SMOOTH PARTICLES ON "LONG TERM" OF ABOUT 3 S INTO A FRACTURED DEBRIS, D<1 MM, AS FOUND POST MORTEM. WITH REGARD TO TERMOS IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT SUPERHEAT EXPLO- SIONS MAY WELL BE EXPECTED IN SUCH A GEOMETRY.
