Abstract: RESEARCH FOR THERMOCHEMICAL DECOMPOSITION OF WATER, USING HIGH TEMPERATURE HEAT,STARTED AT THE JRC-ISPRA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE '70S: THE MOTIVATION WAS A POSSIBLE USE OF THE HIGH VALUE HEAT AVAILABLE FROM THE HIGH TEMPER- ATURE GAS-COOLED REACTORS (HTGRS). THE STUDIES PERFORMED IN A FIRST PHASE WERE THERMODYNAMIC CALCULATIONS BASIC RESEARCH IN CHEMISTRY, EXPERIMENTAL TESTS FOR REACTION KINETICS, VERIFICATION OF CONTINUOUS CHEMICAL REACTIONS PRELIMINARY CORROSION TESTING, PROCESS EVALUATIONS AND APPROXIMATE COST ESTIMATES. THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE IN THE PROCESS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WAS 11001150 K. DIFFERENT THERMOCHEMICAL CYCLES WERE STUDIED, AFTER THE FIRST ONE DEFINED, THE MARK 1 CYCLE: SOME VARIANTS, A FEW MANGANESE CYCLES, THE SEVERAL CYCLES OF THE IRON-CHLORINE FAMILY, THE CYCLES OF THE SULPHUR FAMILY, HYBRID CYCLES. MAIN RESULTS OF THESE EXPLORATIVE STUDIES ARE REPORTED, TOGETHER WITH THE CRITERIA FOR THE PROCESS SELECTION. RESEARCH WAS CON- CENTRATED ON TWO, MORE PROMISING PROCESSES, THE MARK 11 (USING S) AND MARK 13 (USING BR AND S), BOTH HYBRID PROCESSES INCLUDING AN ELECTRO- CHEMICAL REACTION. A COMPLETE LABORATORY CYCLE OF MARK 13 WAS BUILT AND SUCCESSFULLY OPERATED IN 1978: A TECHNOLOGICAL CIRCUIT FOR H2SO4 DECOM- POSITION, OPERATING AT 1100 K AND 25 BARS, WAS BUILT AND TESTED IN 1983. MAIN CONCLUSIONS ARE REPORTED SHOWING THE TECHNOLOGICAL FEASIBILITY OF THE THERMOCHEMICAL PROCESSES FOR HYDROGEN PRODUCTION.
