Abstract: Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) systems may become the coal technology of choice, because of their superior environmental performance and efficiency. Moreover, the compatibility of IGCC systems with carbon capture and the potential to produce hydrogen and electricity from the same plant opens a broad range of future possibilities. The key technical features of such a plant are reviewed and contrasted with those of more standard forms of IGCC.
