Abstract: A NEW FLOW CYTOMETRIC TECHNIQUE FOR MEASUREMENTS AND ANALYSIS OF LASER INDUCED FLUORESCENCE AND OF FORWARD SCATTERED LIGHT BY ALGAL CELLS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AT JRC-ISPRA AND FIRSTLY APPLIED IN EUROPE TO GAIN A MORE COMPREHENSIVE INSIGHT OF THE EFFECTS OF POLLUTANTS (E.G.CU, CD, NTA) ON ALGAL POPULATIONS. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS ON GNOTOBIOTIC FRESHWATER ALGAL COMMUNITIES, INCLUDING GREEN, YELLOW-BROWN AND BLUE-GREEN SPECIES, HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT. THE ADVANTAGES OF FLOW CYTOMETRY AS A FAST AND QUANTI- TATIVE ALTERNATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUES ARE DISCUSSED AND SEVERAL POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF IT TO AQUATIC ENVIRONMENTS ARE SUGGESTED
