Abstract: THE RESIDENTIAL TOWN OF VARESE, 90.000 INHABITANTS, IS SITED IN THE PRE-ALPINE AREA, 50 KM NORTH OF THE INDUSTRIAL AREA OF MILAN. IT WAS CONSIDERED A LOW-POLLUTED AREA UP TO THE AUTUMN 86 WHEN HIGH ACIDITY VALUES WERE DETECTED IN THE RAINFALL AFTER A LONG DRY PERIOD. THE PU- BLIC CONCERN EMPHASIZED BY MASS MEDIA WAS THE MOTIVATION FOR A REQUEST OF AUTHORITIES TO OUR LAB TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM DURING THE APPROACHING COLD SEASON. THREE MAIN QUESTIONS WERE SUBMITTED: 1) WAS THE AIR POLLUTION LEVEL WITHIN THE LEGAL LIMITS. 2) WHAT WAS THE CONTRIBUTION FROM DISTANT AREAS. 3) WHICH INITIATIVES COULD BE UNDERTAKEN
