Abstract: TRACE ELEMENT ANALYSIS NEEDS ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES MORE AND MORE SENSITIVE AND ACCURATE. MASS SPECTROMETRY FULFILLS THESE PREREQUISITES AND NOW FINDS A WIDER USE IN THE DETERMINATION OF METALS IN BIOLOGICAL MATRICES. THE TWO IONISATION TECHNIQUES CONSIDERED AS THE MOST RELIABLE I.E. THE THERMAL IONISATION AND THE INDUCTIVELY COUPLED PLASMA ARE PRESENTED AND SOME QUANTITATIVE RESULTS GIVEN. PRECAUTIONS TO BE ADOPTED AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS AND POSSIBILITIES ARE ALSO BRIEFLY DISCUSSED. THE ISOTOPE DILUTION MASS SPECTROMETRY, A TECHNIQUE THAT ALLOWS ACCURATE QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATIONS OF ELEMENTS, IS ALSO DESCRIBED.
