Abstract: DESPITE THE DIFFICULTIES AND PROBLEMS IN REAL BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF POLLUTION, A NEW FLOW CYTOMETRIC TECHNIQUE FOR MEASUREMENTS AND ANALYSIS OF LASER INDUCED FLUORESCENCE AND OF FOREWARD SCATTERED LIGHT BY ALGAL CELLS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AT THE JRC IN THE LAST 4-YEAR PROGRAMME. PRIORITY HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THE APPLICATION TO MULTISPECIES LABORATORY TESTS, CONSIDERED AS INITIAL STATE OF BOTH PREDICTIVE AND OBSERVATIONAL STRATEGIES FOR ADEGUATE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY CONTROL. DATA REPORTED HERE REPRESENT THE FIRST FLOW CYTOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF FRESHWATER ALGAL POPULATIONS IN BIOLOGICAL TESTINGS AND IN NATURAL SAMPLES, CARRIED OUT IN EUROPE.
