Abstract: THE STUDY INVOLVES THE USE OF BOTH TM AND SPOT SATELLLITE DATA AT DIFFERENT PERIODS OF THE PHENOLOGICAL CALENDAR OF THE PRINCIPAL CROPS OF AN AREA IN NORTHERN GREECE IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE POSSIBILITIES OF CLASSIFICATION. A MULTITEMPORAL APPROACH PROVIDES MORE INFORMATION ON THE SPECTRAL DEFINITION OF CROPS BUT, AT THE SAME TIME, INTRODUCES SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS MAINLY DUE TO THE DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS PRESENT AT THE VARIOUS DATES AS WELL AS SUN ELEVATION AND VIEWING ANGLE. A STUDY OF THE SPECTRAL SIGNATURES OF THE VARIOUS CROPS WILL PROVIDE SOME INDICATION REGARDING THE EFFECT OF THE ABOVE-MENTIONED FACTORS ON THE SPECTRAL RESPONSE OF THE CROPS AND WILL HELP TO DEFINE AN ACTUAL MULTITEMPORAL CLASSIFICATION CRITERION BASED ON THE REAL PHENOLOGICAL VARIATION OF THE DIFFERENT SOIL CANOPIES. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE MAIN CONCEPT AND THE FIRST RESULTS OF THE STUDY.
