Abstract: THE DIVERSE QUANTITIES OF ORGANOHALOGENATED COMPOUNDS IN DRINKING WATER IS CAUSING CONSIDERABLE APPREHENSION AMONG SANITARY AUTHORITIES DUE TO THE POSSIBLE ADVERSE EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH. THIS PROBLEM IS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE IN THOSE COUNTRIES IN WHICH DRINKING WATER IS MAINLY DERIVED FROM SURFACE SOURCES, SUBJECT TO EUTROPHICATION WHICH THEREFORE FAVOUR THE FORMATION OF HALOGENATED COMPOUNDS FOLLOWING DISINFECTION. IN PARTICULAR, SARDINIA IS ONE OF THE REGIONS WHICH SUFFERS GREATLY FROM THE NEGLECTED STATE OF ITS WATER RESOURCES AND IN FACT MOST OF ITS LAKES ARE EUTROPHIC OR HYPERTROPHIC. THIS EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH EVALUATES THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ALGAL BIOMASS AND EXTRACELLULAR PRODUCTS IN THE FORMATION OF TRIHALOMETHANES AND PROPOSES AN ANALYTICAL PROTOCOL FOR THE OPTIMISATION OF DISINFECTION PROCESSES IN WATER TREATMENT PLANTS.
