Abstract: This report explains the construction and operation of APHLIS (The African Postharvest Losses Information System), a recent development in PHL estimation that provides the countries of East and Southern Africa with cereal PHL figures. These are estimated by crop, by country and by province and take into account scale of farming, climate type, number of harvests, proportion marketed etc. (Hodges et al., 2010). APHLIS was developed initially to support cereal supply calculations but may be equally useful to the other applications of PHLs estimates.
