In the light of increased scientific knowledge and public awarness about the adverse effects of power generation to man and nature, the world energy system is in a state of transition. This work aims to: a) highlight the current energy picture in the Mediterranean basin; b) identify the environmental concerns associated with this energy system; c) review the locally available energy resources; d) and finally, review and assess the currently available and future energy technologies with regard to their role in fueling the sustainable development of the countries in the region. The above analysis is done taking into account the current trends of population and energy intensity evolution in the Mediterranean countries, attempting, thus, to provide a useful and comprehensive framework for sustainable energy policy in the region. }, title = {The Impact of New Energy Technologies on the Mediterranean Basin.
