	abstract = {The LISFLOOD that is currently used within the European Flood Alert System (EFAS) has been run with 44 years of meteorological forecast re-analysis data (ERA40) from ECMWF on the pan-European scale. The resulting spatio-temporal distribution of soil moisture has been analysed in order to derive a basis from which future drought situations can be detected and forecasted. Soil moisture patterns in Europe have been compared to independent surface wetness and top-soil soil moisture estimates derived from remote sensing. Information on soil moisture drought will become an integral part of a future European Drought Alert System.
