	abstract = {On 14th February the ECB held a workshop in Arona on exposure scenarios (ES) and exposure assessment under REACH with participation of over 100 experts of which the majority represented industry and industrial organisations. The objective was to communicate the concept of ES and the role industry will have in preparing these, as well as to get industry interested in preparing examples of ES to be used as cases in the guidance development for carrying out a Chemical Safety Assessment under REACH. 
		At the workshop invited speakers presented ongoing and planned activities on preparing ES within a number of industrial sectors. A common experience from this work is that manageable number of ES is needed to cover standard processes within an industrial sector. This is in contrast to earlier statements from industry that a vast number (i.e. >30000) of ES will need to be developed thus representing a workability problem for REACH. There was a broad acceptance among the workshop participants that the bottom-up approach is a way forward in developing ES, i.e. using standard descriptions of current practice within industrial sectors as a starting point for developing ES. 
		ECB received positive response on the request to participate actively in preparations of examples of ES from a number of industries and industrial associations represented at the meeting. These activities are expected to continue during 2006 in the context of the second phase of the REACH Implementation Project 3.2 on the development of Technical Guidance for preparing a Chemical Safety Assessment under REACH.
