	abstract = {In this book, FISTERA (Foresight on IST for the European Research Area) , presents a selection of its findings that aim to provide the basis for assessing research challenges and opportunities for IST applications. The FISTERA network aims at providing a framework and a number of building blocks for priority-setting. These include the analysis of scientific-technological trends, the socio-economic needs and requirements to which IST is supposed to contribute in the future, the European IST capacity in all its dimensions, and the global developments and strategies which European actors will have to deal with. One key challenge for Europe consists in matching the strengths, weaknesses and potential of the European academic and industrial research and innovation system in the field of IST with the desired vision of an Information Society for Europe. The authors hope that the building blocks presented contribute to set priorities that could serve to justify public policy action at national and/or European level.
