JRC-IE joined Task 17 with the HC-15 project (and a contribution of one person year/year) in July 2004. The JRC-IE project addresses the accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility of hydrogen sorption measurements on solid-state materials, in view of the scatter in the data reported so far in the literature. Such measurements could be sensitive to experimental conditions and to the sample history. Errors may also arise from insufficient material characterisation and lack of standardised testing procedures. This research work was performed in support of the development of measurement methodologies and of the definition of best practices and could contribute to the elaboration of standards for the characterisation of hydrogen storage materials. To execute the work programme, a laboratory has been set-up with measuring instruments adapted to the most prominent characterisation techniques for hydrogen sorption, covering different temperature and pressure ranges and sample sizes. The overall objective of this research activity is to compare techniques and instruments. The programme starts with measurements performed on a ‘model’ material system (LaNi5-yAlyHx) to identify the most significant sources of errors and their relative importance at different measurement temperatures and pressures. The macroscopic characterisation is supported by microstructural characterisation.
