Baseline assessment and monitoring of water resources exposed to unconventional hydrocarbon exploration and extraction activities

cover
The EU has potential reserves of natural gas and oil that is trapped in shale formations and some Member States are actively pursuing shale gas exploration. Extraction of oil and gas from shale formations necessitates the use of hydraulic fracturing. The impact of this technology on the environment and in particular on groundwater needs to be monitored in order assess the performance of wells that have been fractured. In this setting, contamination of groundwater from the use of fracturing technology is of great public concern and the public concerned of shale gas projects expects to be informed about releases of pollutants from shale oil and gas production. It is necessary to determine baseline parameters before fracturing takes place and to monitor these parameters during and after fracturing. There is no agreed methodology or use of standards for the measurement of the baseline and the monitoring of baseline parameters. This technical workshop was organized with the aim to discuss the technical and scientific challenges of baseline assessment and subsequent monitoring of those water resources which may be exposed to unconventional hydrocarbon exploration and extraction activities.
