JRC Support for the Development and Implementation of Advanced Bioenergy Technologies
Bioenergy dominated energy supply until the industrial revolution and even after fossil fuels took over the leading roles underpinning growing industrial economies, biomass has remained the leading contributor to the renewable energy mix in the EU. Approximately two-thirds of Europe's renewable energy is derived from biomass and the contribution to total energy consumption is expected to grow over the coming decades. However, any use of biomass must be environmentally sustainable and economically viable. The role of the European Commission Joint Research Centre is to provide scientific and technical support to all stages of political policy development, implementation and monitoring and has been engaged in these processes for biomass utilisation for almost a decade.
