Involuntary Non-standard Employment: evidence from Italian regions
We investigate the determinants of involuntary non-standard (part-time and temporary) employment (INE), using EU-LFS data on 2.5 million workers in Italian regions over the period 1999-2010. Regional differences significantly affect the probability of workers being involuntarily employed in part-time and temporary jobs, with higher probabilities for workers in Southern and insular regions. Women, young individuals, and low-skilled workers are at particular risk of INE. The same holds for graduates, whose chance of finding satisfactory jobs is lower than individuals with diplomas. Finally, we find that INE moves counter-cyclically and that the Italian labour market reforms increased the risk of INE.
