Natech risk reduction and assessment
Natural hazards can damage structures and equipment housing hazardous materials at industrial facilities. This can lead to loss-of-containment events with often severe consequences due to toxic releases, fires or explosions. Awareness of this Natech risk is growing and dedicated research initiatives aim to close existing gaps in reducing the risk. This paper provides an overview of the state of knowledge related to Natech risk reduction, including the most common equipment damage and failure modes for different types of natural hazards and a selection of possible risk-reduction measures. It also discusses the Natech risk-assessment approach and introduces the RAPID-N tool for rapid Natech risk assessment and mapping.
