The purpose of the special section of the journal on “Enabling Management of the Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystem Services Nexus” is to collect scientific contributions addressing real-world inclusion of ecosystem services in the management of the Water-Food-Energy Nexus at local, river basin and regional scales. The outcome of the call for papers showed the paucity of example applications of the four pillar Nexus. Although of good quality and worthy of publication, several of the submitted manuscripts lacked the full Nexus perspective, with ecosystem services the least addressed in the trade-off between competing uses. The special section comprises a diverse set of papers spanning a survey of watershed investments in natural infrastructure solutions, an assessment of institutional arrangements for payments for watershed service schemes, methodological approaches for addressing the Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystem nexus and specific assessments of the four pillars of the Nexus in large transboundary river basins (Nile and Danube). This editorial provides an overview of the challenges in the integration of ecosystem services into the Water Nexus.
