PVGIS version 5: improvements to models and features
We present the latest version of the PVGIS free online PV estimation tool, PVGIS 5. It includes significant improvements, not only to the data extended spatial coverage and increased length of the time series, but also to the accuracy of the estimation models implemented. The estimation of the PV energy yield now takes into account the effect of wind on the module temperature, which in turn affects its performance; and also the effect of the spectral distribution of the received irradiance. Instead of the long term averages available in previous versions, PVGIS 5 uses and provides the complete dataset of hourly values for several years and the corresponding statistical values. Thanks to the combination of satellite retrieved data and reanalysis values, the spatial coverage has been substantially increased,
including now most of the Americas and northern Europe (above 65oN), while maintaining a high temporal resolution of hourly values and spatial resolution of few km. A new feature of PVGIS 5 is the TMY, whose data of solar radiation, ambient temperature, relative humidity among other variables, is suitable for studies on the energy performance on buildings.
