Effect of Shear Span-to-depth Ratio in Concrete Beams strengthened in Shear with Textile-Reinforced Mortar (TRM)

This paper presents an experimental study on shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with textile reinforced mortar (TRM). Key parameters of this study include: (a) the shear span-to-depth ratio, a/d (a/d =1.6, a/d =2.6 and a/d =3.6) and (b) the number of TRM layers (1 and 3). In total, nine RC beams with rectangular section were tested as simply supported in three-point bending under monotonic loading. Three beams were tested for each shear span to-depth-ratio, namely a beam without receiving strengthening and served as control specimen and two beams strengthened with one and three U-wrapped TRM layers, respectively. A textile mesh material with equal quantity of high-strength carbon fibres in two orthogonal directions was used as reinforcement. It is concluded that the shear span-to-depth ratio has no effect on both the failure mode and the contribution of the jacket to the total shear resistance of the beams. Increasing the number of TRM layers (from one to three) resulted in a non-proportional shear capacity increase, whereas the failure mode of TRM-strengthened specimens was not affected from the change in the number of TRM layers.
