Collaboration between disaster managers and scientists
A joint workshop of the European Commission and UN OCHA was held at the JRC in Ispra from 20 to 21st June 2017. The meeting was attended by 19 representatives from the most relevant institutions in the field of disaster risk management. The goal of the workshop was threefold: (i) To explore the needs of disaster managers concerning accessibility, reliability and usability of high quality data and information products during emergencies; (ii) To discuss the transfer of scientific outputs from scientists to disaster managers; (iii) To develop parameters of collaboration between disaster managers and other stakeholders. The meeting drew attention to different modes of collaboration. The group discussed both good practices of cooperation and potential actions to improve the translation of scientific data into information products. The workshop confirmed that a close cooperation between
the EU Crisis Management Laboratories and the Global Crisis Centre Network (GCCN) would be beneficial. However, the parameters for collaboration in different scenarios need to be defined to clarify scope and procedures for interaction.
