Asian cleanup - what is needed?

cover
The European Commission, through the Instrument of Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC) has set up a programme for the clean-up of highly contaminated former Soviet Union abandoned uranium mining sites in Central Asia. Most of these sites are located in the mountainous area above the Syr Darya River and the fertile Fergana Valley. The programme includes, along with regional projects aiming at establishing a watershed monitoring system for the Syr Daria river basin and in raising awareness among the population on the issues related to living close to the uranium legacy sites, also site specific feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments for the remediation of 7 sites set among the top priorities by an IAEA baseline study performed in 2009. The results of these studies and the way forward for the clean-up of the sites are briefly described.
