The Earth Observation and Social Sensing Big Data pilot project was launched on the 1st January 2015 as a response to the need for JRC to pursue a dedicated approach to 'Big Data' and address the volume, variety, and velocity of the data flows originating from the EU Copernicus programme. As a result, the setting up of a JRC prototype platform for big data storage, management, processing, and analysis was initiated in 2016. Its specifications are primarily based on the requirements of the JRC Knowledge Production units. In addition, the multi-year project contributes to JRC collaborations with international institutions, in particular with CERN, ESA, and EUSC. The aim of the formation of this collection is for the Earth Observation and Social Sensing Big Data project to share datasets produced in-house that can be proved valuable for scientific and policy-making purposes.
