Innovation and inequality in the EU: for better or for worse?
This study investigates the link between innovation and income inequality in the EU. We use a panel of NUTS regions, and calculate income inequality measures based on EU-SILC, the GSOEP, and the BHPS of the years 2004 through 2014. Our estimates show evidence that innovation has significant and diverse effects deploying different income inequality indicators: it reduces inequality of the overall distribution and the gap between high incomes and lower and middle income groups, while enhancing at the same time high incomes.
