Abstract: The 2020 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) ranks 180 countries on 32 performance indicators across 11 issue categories covering environmental health and ecosystem vitality. These metrics provide a gauge at national scale of how close countries are to established environmental policy goals. Since 2006 that the EPI is released biannually by the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy (YCELP) and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University. The European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN) at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) was invited by the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy to audit the 2020 edition of the EPI. The statistical audit presented herein aims to contribute to ensuring the transparency of the EPI methodology and the reliability of the results. The report touches upon data quality issues, the conceptual and statistical coherence of the framework and the impact of modelling assumptions on the results. The analysis suggests that meaningful inferences can be drawn from the EPI. It confirms that the 2020 EPI meets the quality standards for statistical soundness and acknowledges the EPI as a reliable composite indicator to measure environmental performance worldwide.
