Towards FAIR Nanosafety Data

cover
Nanotechnology is a key enabling technology with several billion Euros in global investment from public funding during the last decade, leading to large collaborative projects, which have investigated the environmental and health safety aspects of nanomaterials (NMs), but the reuse of data in safety assessment is lagging behind. Here we summarize the known challenges to the efficient reuse of nanosafety data, and how to align them with the recently established FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) guiding principles. We include a set of recommendations based on experience from gathering, generating, curating and reusing nanosafety data within the European project NanoReg2. We describe the newly established Nanosafety data interface, which provides aggregated findability, accessibility and interoperability across physicochemical, bio-nano interaction, human toxicity, including omics, ecotoxicological and exposure data. In addition, a semi-quantitative evaluation of the data FAIRness is provided. This paper illustrates the path towards FAIR nanosafety data enabling maximum possible reuse of available data, to avoid duplication, plan new research and ensure safe and sustainable nanotechnology.
