The EU Centres of Excellence Initiative and its long term strategy to tackle CBRN risks
The European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Centres of Excellence Initiative (EU CBRN CoE) celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020, with an ongoing pandemic that has highlighted the foresight and the effort undertook by the joint venture of the European Union, the United Nations, namely UNICRI, and the CBRN CoE Partner Countries.
In the Middle East, the National Focal Points, supported by the Amman Regional Secretariat (RS) and the CoE technical partners, have coordinated a national effort to define a national CBRN policy for each of the countries. This policy is formalised in single National Action Plans (NAPs), which also led the RS to shape the first CBRN Regional Action Plan for the Middle East.
Creating these structures and policies has allowed the Middle East Partner Countries in the past years to launch and implement specific projects that are now at the heart of the response to CBRN risks, including the COVID-19 crisis.
