JRC MARS Bulletin - Crop monitoring in Europe – January 2021 – Vol. 29 No 1
Cold and snowy start of 2021 in south-western Europe
Weather conditions during the review period covered in this issue of the Bulletin (1 December 2020 to 18 January 2021) were predominantly warmer than usual in most parts of Europe, but with significant cold spells at the beginning of December and January, most markedly in the Iberian Peninsula, western France, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Associated with these events, the number of cold days (with minimum temperature < 0 °C) in these regions were substantially higher than usual. At the beginning of January, the cold spell was accompanied by Storm Filomena, which hit Spain triggering an exceptional snow event in large parts of the country.
