Drivers and socio-economic impacts of inequalities in the EU
Inequality is a long-lasting phenomenon with major economic and social implications for individuals and societies. Relying on the newly developed Multidimensional Inequality Monitoring Framework for the EU (EU MIMF), this policy brief discusses the results of an analysis of the major determinants of the multiple facets of inequality, and the implications of those aspects of inequality for individual happiness and life satisfaction.
Multidimensional inequalities tend to have a significant negative impact on individual perceptions of happiness and life satisfaction. The results also suggest that a society that wants to mitigate the adverse effects of inequality should look beyond increasing the size of its economy and aim also at improving the quality of its institutions (to provide a basis for fair distribution and accountability) and enhancing education and human capital.
