Consumption Footprint: assessing the environmental impacts of EU consumption
As part of its commitment towards more sustainable production and consumption, the European Commission developed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-based framework, which allows assessing the environmental impacts related to EU consumption of goods and services. Two indicators have been developed: the Consumption Footprint and the Domestic Footprint. The indicators are relevant in light of achieving the Sustainable Development Goal on Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), adopted in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and to assess implications on other environmentally-relevant SDGs. These indicators aim at supporting the monitoring of European Green Deal Ambitions, such as circular economy (Circular Economy Action Plan), zero pollution (Zero Pollution Action Plan), sustainable food production (Farm to Fork Strategy) and biodiversity conservation (EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030).
