Using crowdsourcing for real-time food price monitoring in African countries
Real-time spatial food price data is critical to assess food security threats in Sub-Saharan Africa food systems and target timely interventions. The successful implementation of the FPCA tool illustrates the potential of engaging citizens through a mobile app for spatial and time-rich data, processed and quality checked in real-time, following a sound statistical methodology. The ease of activating the tool remotely in an emergency such as the COVID-19 shows its potential in responding to sudden food system shocks. Therefore, crowdsourcing can complement official data in temporal and spatial richness and be combined with other spatial data for better assessment. An interactive web dashboard provided rapid, ground-level evidence of COVID-related price increases. It provides a helpful tool for policymakers and other economic actors, providing rapid, localized data to inform and target responses.
