Mapping interlinkages between EU-funded research projects and EU policy priorities
Application of the TIM open access tool to case studies in the context of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030
This work is an initiative of the European Commission (EC) Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity (KCBD) in support of the EC Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. It aims to explore EU research projects funded during the FP7 and Horizon 2020 Framework Programmes (available from the EC CORDIS database). It maps their linkages with the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 (and each of its four pillars) and with the cross-policy topic of “Biodiversity and Health”.
The methodological workflow developed is easily replicable and alternates automatic and manual processes. The analysis was conducted with the JRC "Tools for Innovation Monitoring" (TIM) Open Access software. A conditional search string consisting of keywords is defined to best qualify the topic/policy of interest. The dataset of relevant projects is then explored through 3 main lenses: list of projects including their spatial and temporal trends, partnerships/collaboration axes, and thematic foci keywords automatically extracted.
The results of this study are available as an interactive TIM dashboard on the KCBD website. To minimise the need for human intervention in the process, our recommendation would be to improve the quality of projects' metadata archived in the EC CORDIS database, starting with those funded under the Horizon Europe Framework Programme (2021-2027). Further KCBD analyses could be conducted on the relevance of EU-funded research projects to other cross-policy sectors, e.g. Biodiversity and Trade.
