External hazards related events
Vol I: Main Report
Topical studies are a major product of the European Clearinghouse providing in-depth assessment of safety significant events and generic safety issues at nuclear power plants. External hazards are a major challenge to nuclear safety as the Fukushima-Daiichi accident has shown. A large number of events related to strong winds, flooding, intrusion of chemicals, vegetable and animals, fires and man-induced hazards stemming from e.g. traffic or nearby works have been reviewed, resulting in the formulation of 44 lessons learned. These lessons are discussed and grouped according to the different types of hazard, thus providing a structured knowledge base that can be useful to nuclear safety authorities and to nuclear operators to enhance the safety of all kinds of nuclear reactors.
