Case 19: Water reuse and sustainable seawater desalination
Societal (increase in water demand and urbanization, particularly in coastal regions) and hydrological (climate- and land use-related) changes have prompted for the development of seawater desalination. While in principle a last resort solution, desalination can be viewed more comprehensively as a way to augment the terrestrial water cycle by transferring water from the sea to the atmosphere, if integrated with evaporative water reuse (e.g. irrigation). In this way, it could help mitigate the impacts of change and contribute to adaptation. This case study presents European scale hydrological simulations to quantify the possible direct and indirect reduction of water stress following from the mainstreaming of desalination and evaporative water reuse as a solution to water scarcity.
