The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre has been involved in satellite remote sensing research and applications for almost as long as earth observing satellites have flown. This paper documents the main strands of this science, sets out the connections between them and highlights the major milestones. A narrative section describes the institutional changes framing remote sensing research at the JRC since the JRC began non-nuclear research in 1968. It sets out the principles of remote sensing, digital image processing, international co-operation, education and outreach, highlights the impacts the science has had on EU policy-making, and looks at how policy has had to address remote sensing too. Side boxes provide a more detailed window into work of the European Microwave Signature Laboratory, Marine Optics, The Global Human Settlement Layer, the degree of urbanisation, support to External Action of the Commission, post conflict and needs assessment, and Monitoring Agriculture with Remote Sensing. A fully referenced time-line spanning the period 1968 to 2021 highlights significant events and provides links to supporting documents.
