Venti Anni di Storia Passata attraverso l'Analisi dei Sedimenti Lacustri della Baia di Pallanza (Lago Maggiore)

cover
The recent history of Pallanza Bay has been investigated on the basis of sediment core samples. The observed sedimentation rate corresponds to 15 mm uncompacted sediment per year, and the rate has been estimated using 137 Cs as an indicator. The concentrations of S, C and Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn, measured in the sliced sediment core samples, indicate a net tendency towards decrease during the five years of sediment deposition. In particular, the mercury concentration decreased from 10.6 to 0.38 mg/kg, most probably due to reduced input from the erlier observed point sources and, in all probability, as a consequence of massive dredgings at the mouth of river Toce. The concentrations of other trace elements show a similar behaviour.
