Testing interoperability of Visible Digital Seals (VDS) for implementation to Schengen visas
The present technical report summarises the results of a test on implementation and verification of the 2D visible digital seal as it has been specified for use in the Schengen visa. Use of a digitally signed 2d barcode (also called a visible digital seal) for Schengen visas has been introduced with Commission Implementing decision C(2020) 2672 to add cryptography-based security to visa stickers.
A visible digital seals is, in simple words, a 2d barcode which contain a subset of the information printed on the visa sticker. This subset of information is digitally signed by a « barcode signer » authorised by the Country Signing Certificate Authority of the visa issuing country and is represented as a 2D barcode.
This report provides an overview of the content and format of the visible digital seal and tests reading different variations of the 2d barcode with a smartphone app. It then describes the test methodology, the test setup and the test results. Finally concluding remarks and recommendations are provided
