The development of energy infrastructure has been identified as crucial for the fulfilment of multifaceted EU policy objectives in the energy field. The EU's support to projects is financial, technical or political, and it is explicated through a series of legislative acts. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the main energy policy initiatives introduced (or expected to be introduced soon) in recent years and their impact on European energy infrastructure development, such as the revision of the Trans-European Networks for Energy (TEN-E Regulation), funding mechanisms to foster sustainable investments in renewable energies and the EU taxonomy on sustainable activities. The authors also discuss possible future improvements of the EU policy and regulatory frameworks on energy with the aim of supporting an efficient achievement of the European Green Deal objectives.
