Mechanical Fatigue in Monolithic Non-Transforming Ceramics
An extensive literature has led to a review of the results of tests and theories on cyclic fatigue in monolithic non-transforming ceramics. First, an overview of past and actual approaches to cyclic mechanical fatigue in ceramics is presented. Then each of the fatigue mechanisms which have been observed or proposed to explain mechanical test results is studied separately. The relevance of the mechanisms is judged, and corresponding micromechanical or phenomenological models are introduced. A concluding paragraph emphasizes the important realisations of former investigations, and shows the challenges for future research.
