Mapping interlinkages between EU-funded research projects and EU policy priorities - Application of the TIM open access tool to case studies in the context of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030
Case studies on the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the cross-policy domain Biodiversity and Health
This study is an initiative of the European Commission (EC) Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity (KCBD) in support of the EC Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG R&I). It explores a set of EU-funded research projects from the FP7 and Horizon 2020 Framework Programmes (available from the EC CORDIS database) in terms of scientific production including their spatial and temporal trends, partnerships and thematic foci. It uses the JRC "Tools for Innovation Monitoring" (TIM) Open Access software to map the linkages between these research projects and the policy priorities of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 (and each of its four pillars). The exercise was repeated to address the relevance of the projects to the cross-sectoral topic of “Biodiversity and Health”. The results of this study are presented as an interactive TIM dashboard. The main outcome is a set of recommendations for DG R&I and project leaders to improve the quality and the focus of projects' metadata in the future. Further KCBD analyses could also be conducted on the relevance of EU-funded research projects to other cross-policy sectors, e.g. Biodiversity and Trade. This brief is available to download from the “EU research project - policy link explorer” section of the KCBD website (https://knowledge4policy.ec.europa.eu/biodiversity/topic/eu-research-project-policy-link-explorer_en). Based on a JRC study (JRC127579).
