Integration of Photovoltaic in the JRC-ELSA Building
To gain more knowledge about the optimum configuration of Photo Voltaic hybrid building components, the EEI Unit of the JRC-ISEI has performed pilot research. Integration of such devices in buildings as part of facades or roof components has gained a lot of interest in the past few years from PV industry, architects and researchers. The paper reports about modelling and experimental work for the assessment of the energy efficient impact of PVdevice integration on building facades. The ELSA building on the JRC Ispra's site has been fitted with 770 m2 of a-Si Pv modules, as part of the ECOCENTRE project, giving a rated power output of about 30kWp. The particular situation has been created of 30 chimneys which could serve for heating in the winter period and deliver the driving force for cooling in the summer season. Different aspects are investigated, such as electrical performance, the improved heatloss coefficient of the component and the thermal recovery from the ventilated air in the cavity between the PV device and wall.
