The Fifth HPLC Intercomparison on Phytoplankton Pigments (HIP-5) Technical Report
The JRC Marine Optical Laboratory has regularly organized inter-comparison exercises on High Performance Liquide Chromatography (HPLC) Phytoplankton Pigments (HIP) analysis to asses the quality of the data used in support to remote sensing activities.
The HIP-5 has been launched in 2019, in continuity with the previous HIPs round robin and to support the validation of Copernicus Sentinel-3 missions for what concerns marine phytoplankton data products validation. The exercise involved 8 international laboratories applying the HPLC technique for the determination of marine pigments concentration, including accredited and quality certified laboratories. The participants are compared both on certified mixes pigments (mix standard) and on natural samples representative of different water-kind. The natural samples collected for the exercise are representative of various oceanic regimes and trophic conditions.
The overall objectives of HIPs exercises are a) creating a reference community for phytoplankton pigment analysis capable of supporting ocean colors activities where an accuracy of 25% associated to the chlorophyll-a measurement is considered acceptable for data satellite validation and 15 % is request for algorithm refine; b)to quantify the measurement uncertainty associated with the reported result of each laboratory; c) improving and maintaining the quality of results for a single laboratory with time and d) quantifying the differences among laboratories applying published methods
